Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

First PhDs in Nuclear Engineering highlight UOIT Convocation

2014 ceremonies will see university present 10,000th degree, four honorary degrees

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) largest-ever graduating class will cross the stage during 2014 Convocation Ceremonies on June 5 and 6. Graduating students, their families and friends will be joined by UOIT faculty and staff, along with community members for the ceremonies at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa, Ontario.

UOIT’s 11th Convocation will be highlighted by the university’s first PhD recipients from the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science. The conferring of a PhD in Nuclear Engineering to Fawaz Ali and to Nafisah Khan, both of Toronto, Ontario will take place during the first ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 5.

In addition to the university conferring approximately 1,800 degrees over two days, UOIT will present honorary Doctor of Laws degrees to:

  • Mr. Robert J. Deluce for exceptional professional achievement, entrepreneurial drive and vision to carve a niche in the volatile airline industry and build one of the most successful companies in Canada.
  • Mr. Gary Edgar for demonstrating leadership skills and passion to advance First Nations rights and helping overcome significant community challenges facing the Mississaugas of Scugog Island.
  • Ms. Mary Jo Haddad for extraordinary leadership within Canada’s health-care sector and being a powerful champion for pediatric health.
  • Dr. Ilse Treurnicht for her professional trajectory, which has taken her from chemist to entrepreneur to venture capitalist and, now, to a leadership role in Canada’s innovation community.

“Congratulations to our 2014 graduates for their hard work and dedication, and to the honorary degree recipients for their outstanding contributions, and commitment to their professions and communities,” said the Honourable Perrin Beatty, UOIT Chancellor. “Every UOIT graduate is linked by a spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation, a proven ability to be adaptable and resourceful in the approach to solving problems.”
