Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) commitment to drive ambitious research and innovative science is expanding in an exciting new international direction. UOIT and Tongji University in Shanghai, China have teamed up to co-host the first joint UOIT-Tongji University Conference on Advanced Vehicle Energy Concepts and Structures.

“This conference provides University of Ontario Institute of Technology research faculty and graduate students with a key opportunity to connect with some of the best automotive engineering researchers from top-ranked universities in China, Germany and Italy,” said Dr. Michael Owen, UOIT Vice-President Research, Innovation and International. “As the planet depletes fossil fuel resources, we are compelled to work together on the development of sustainable energy sources and associated new technologies. These solutions will be discovered through international collaboration, and UOIT’s engineers and scientists are important global contributors to these discussions.”

Representatives of UOIT’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science shared research findings at the October collaborative conference in Shanghai, and also laid the groundwork for future research collaborations and academic exchanges. In addition to UOIT and Tongji University, papers were presented by researchers with Technische Universität Braunschweig (Brunswick, Germany) and Politecnico do Torino (Turin, Italy), a UOIT partner institution.
