We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT expands international ties: signs agreement with Bahçeşehir University in Turkey

Students at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) have new opportunities for international exchange and collaboration through an agreement the university has signed with Bahçeşehir University (BAU) in Istanbul, Turkey.

The International Academic Student Exchange Agreement between UOIT and BAU will provide for the mutual enrichment of students from an academic, scientific and cultural perspective. Students from a wide range of UOIT programs will be eligible for consideration for the exchange program.

Initially, two students from each university will be eligible for the exchange program. Participants will pay tuition at their home university, but enjoy all of the privileges afforded to domestic students at the host university. There may also be opportunities for work placement in the host country.

"This agreement advances the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s growing number of global connections and recognizes the importance our university places on providing international student opportunities," said Michael Owen, PhD, Vice-President, Research, Innovation and International. “We look forward to working with Bahçeşehir University as we build this program and explore new areas of collaboration.”

Nominations and applications for the UOIT-BAU exchange program must be submitted to UOIT’s International office no later Sunday, March 15.

The agreement was signed on Friday, February 13 in UOIT’s Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre, by UOIT President Tim McTiernan, PhD and Bahçeşehir University President Şenay Yalçın, PhD.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology now has 37 international academic agreements with universities in 23 different countries, with another seven currently in development.
