Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

The Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science (FESNS) continues to reinforce its solid international teaching and research reputation following a strong showing at the 23rd International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-23) held May 17 to 21 in Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Japan.

Twelve graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) presented a total of 14 papers at the world’s largest nuclear engineering conference – the premier global event for addressing the needs of the nuclear industry. The UOIT delegation to ICONE-23 also included four FESNS faculty members.

“What makes this particularly impressive is that the University of Ontario Institute of Technology had the largest group of students at ICONE-23, and UOIT students also received the largest number of conference awards,” said Dr. Igor Pioro, Professor, FESNS and the faculty supervisor of most UOIT attendees. “We are very proud of UOIT’s tradition of professors and graduate students collaborating on new and exciting developments in the field of nuclear engineering.”

ICONE focuses on the current status of nuclear power around the world. It has been jointly sponsored by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) since 1991, and co-sponsored by the Chinese Nuclear Society since 2005. ICONE-23 attracted more than 900 global participants from around the world and featured nearly 600 new technical papers and research presentations.
