Running and walking are usually rewarding activities in their own right—but the ninth-annual Campus Charity Walk and Run for the Boys and Girls Club of Durham (BGCD) made lacing up shoes even more fulfilling.

Almost 100 University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Durham College (DC) students, staff, faculty and community members took part in the charity run on April 5. An additional 25 volunteers also contributed their time to make the event possible.

Dr. Carla Cesaroni, Associate Professor in the university’s Faculty of Social Science and Humanities organized the event, which raised $2,760 for the BGCD this year. Dr. Cesaroni says both the amount raised and number of participants is significant, considering the run did not happen last year.

All funds raised will go directly to the BGCD’s Youth Outreach program for high-risk youth. This program is entirely self-funded and relies on charitable donations as well as funds collected through events such as this.

“We hope our event will continue to grow so we can continue to support our community partner and impact the lives of high-risk youth,” says Dr. Cesaroni. “Next year marks our 10th year of the event—hopefully we can get lots of people out!”

If you missed the run but are still feeling charitable, there’s still time to donate to the BGCD before the end of this week. To learn more, please contact Dr. Cesaroni.
