Bermuda high school students explore university’s Forensic Science program

They were far from home, but exploring if they would like to make the University of Ontario Institute of Technology their academic home in the coming years.

As part of the university’s international recruitment outreach, a contingent of Bermudian high school students stopped by campus on June 22 to explore the wide range of outstanding program opportunities available. One of the options the students had a chance to investigate was the Faculty of Science’s highly popular and internationally accredited Honours Forensic Science program.

The visitors checked out mock scenario investigations at the Crime Scene House on the Windfields Farm Lands and toured the Forensic Teaching Lab.

After a short lecture, the students rolled up their sleeves for some hands-on activities, rotating through different crime scenarios, including:

• Shooting scenario to recover cartridge casings and analyze bullet trajectory.
• Bloodstain pattern analysis.
• Hit-and-run accident scenario to examine glass fracture patterns.
• Fingerprint dusting and recovery.
• Blood spatter demonstrations using fake blood and a dummy head.
