Family fun at UOIT’s sixth-annual Science Rendezvous on May 11

Science Rendezvous 2013

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) will continue a popular community tradition on Saturday, May 11 when it opens its doors for Science Rendezvous. The free admission UOIT event that promotes science awareness for all ages is part of a nationwide Science Rendezvous celebration being held at universities and colleges all across Canada.

“Science Rendezvous is a great way to get people involved and allow them to recognize that science can be fun,” said Annette Tavares, Lecturer, UOIT Faculty of Science and organizer of Science Rendezvous at UOIT. “Science doesn’t have to be intimidating and it really is a part of everyday life. Kids and parents have loved this event every May because of the hands-on learning experiences and the chance to learn about cool things from UOIT scientists.”

This year, Science Rendezvous at UOIT will be showcasing some new demonstrations and activities for visitors as well as some old favourites. For the first time guests will be able to tour the university’s Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE), the first testing and research centre of its kind in Canada, which features one of the largest and most powerful climatic wind tunnels.

Science Rendezvous participants can participate in activities such as Sort ‘Em Up – a  video game created by UOIT graduates from the Faculty of Business and Information Technology that teaches players how to properly sort and dispose of common household waste, make their very own liquid nitrogen ice cream or win cool prizes by playing Science Jeopardy. Guests can also learn how to remove the different colours that make up candy using candy chromatography, create their own slime and much more!

  • Register for Science Rendezvous at uoit.ca/sciencerendezvous! Check out the list of program activities and get directions to UOIT.

When you arrive, pick up your Science Rendezvous Passport and go around to each station to collect activity stickers and stamps. Remember: admission is FREE! Children must be accompanied by an adult.

UOIT was one of the first universities to host Science Rendezvous, which started out as a small event held across Ontario in 2008. Since then the event has grown into a coast-to-coast science exposition.

“Last year, approximately 700 people from across Durham Region attended and the expectation is that everyone will have a great time again on May 11, especially with the new activities and the chance to see the climatic wind tunnel inside ACE,” said Tavares. “Science Rendezvous is a great example of how UOIT is engaged with the community as we open our doors to everyone. UOIT is not just a university but a space for community involvement as well. We look forward to welcoming scientists of all ages and abilities!”
