Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Thanks to the efforts of sponsors, donors, volunteers and participants, the 16th annual Durham Region Roger Anderson Charity Classic golf tournament was another huge success, raising $324,000. Held on June 13 at Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility in Ajax, Ontario, more than 240 golfers teed off for a chance to improve the lives of individuals living in Durham Region.

Hosted by Durham Region Chair Roger Anderson, the tournament has created and maintained a legacy of giving to community organizations including providing assistance to students in financial need at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Durham College, and child and youth initiatives at the Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health. Over the years, the tournament has raised more than $1 million for UOIT.

Representatives from each of the three organizations receiving proceeds from the tournament were on hand for a cheque presentation and the chance to extend their gratitude for the ongoing and enthusiastic support of everyone involved in the tournament.

Golfers had the chance to win one of three cars provided by Fraser Ford in Oshawa, Ontario in addition to a variety of exciting live and silent auction prizes including: full use of a private box at a Toronto Maple Leafs game in the 2013-2014 season; autographed NHL memorabilia; a Bigwin Island Golf Club package; a variety of fine dining experiences; UOIT and Durham College tuition packages; and much more.
