UOIT enrolment approaches 10,000 students
University welcomes its largest-ever first-year class
September 30, 2013
OSHAWA, ONTARIO - Buoyed by the largest number of first-year students in its history, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) has reached an all-time enrolment high for the 2013-2014 academic year.
As of September 19 - the last day for students to add fall courses - the university's Office of the Registrar says 9,817 undergraduate and graduate students now study at UOIT - representing a combined 6.7 per cent enrolment increase over last year.
"The University of Ontario Institute of Technology's upward enrolment trend remains impressive and demonstrates a very strong awareness of the diverse range of market-driven programs that we offer," said Brad MacIsaac, UOIT Registrar, and Assistant Vice-President, Planning and Analysis. "UOIT graduates have a tremendous reputation for being able to use technology in creative ways. Employers recognize a UOIT degree represents a job-ready professional who is also adaptable to the rapid change we often see in today's workplace."
This fall UOIT welcomed 2,864 new undergraduate and 192 new graduate students, the largest incoming class in the university's history. At the graduate studies level, 606 students are now enrolled in UOIT's master's and PhD programs, representing a 17 per cent increase over last year. The increase is credited to the maturing of UOIT's PhD program offerings.
"This new report indicates enrolment growth is continuing and quality is strengthening," said MacIsaac. "And we are still very much in a position to grow. Our new Strategic Plan anticipates our enrolment will double to 20,000 students by 2030."
The university's international student enrolment also continues a strong upward trend, with 581 students from outside Canada now calling UOIT home.
UOIT offers 46 undergraduate and 29 graduate programs across its seven faculties. The university also delivers 18 Pathways diploma-to-degree programs in six faculties, which allow eligible Ontario college students to apply their diploma towards a university degree.
