Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

A University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks hockey jersey has been shipped north – to be proudly worn in Sudbury, Ontario by the President of Laurentian University.

UOIT President Tim McTiernan recently made a wager with his Laurentian counterpart Dominic Giroux on the result of an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) men’s hockey game in Sudbury between the Ridgebacks and the Laurentian Voyageurs. UOIT provided the opposition on October 25 for Laurentian’s first men’s hockey home game in 13 years, which marked the program’s return to the OUA circuit. The Ridgebacks spoiled the party by edging Laurentian 5-4.

Prior to the game, plenty of social media chatter from Laurentian suggested the Ridgebacks would lose the game. This prompted President McTiernan to issue a friendly challenge to President Giroux that the losing team’s president would have to wear the opposing team's jersey.

UOIT won Laurentian’s home opener on a goal by Mitch Bennett, whose goal with just 19 seconds left in the game broke a 4-4 tie. The goal completed a hat trick for Bennett, who was more than happy when he arrived back in Oshawa to help President McTiernan formally send the Ridgebacks sweater to Sudbury.
