Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

The 125 participants in the 2014 Campus Charity Walk and Run raised more than $2,200 for the Boys and Girls Club of Durham.

University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Durham College (DC) students, staff, faculty, and community members traded in their winter boots for sneakers on April 9 for the seventh-annual Campus Charity Walk and Run for the Boys and Girls Club of Durham (BGCD). More than $2,200 was raised, with all proceeds from the event going to children enrolled in the BGCD.

The 125 participants, who also included firefighter cadets from DC, staff and youth from the BGCD, and students from G.L. Roberts Collegiate Vocational Institute in Oshawa, Ontario, departed from the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre at 2:30 p.m. to walk or run five kilometres around the campus. Nineteen volunteers also assisted with setup and registration.

“This is a very important cause and I am pleased that so many members of our campus community came out to show their support,” said Dr. Carla Cesaroni, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, and Event Co-ordinator. “The Boys and Girls Club of Durham provides children a safe and healthy environment where they learn, participate and grow. We look forward to continuing to host this event in the coming years.”

DC firefighter cadets completed a 10 km route as a class assignment.
