Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT benefits once again from Roger Anderson Charity Classic

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology is grateful to be among the beneficiaries of the 2014 Roger Anderson Charity Classic golf tournament.

Hosted annually by Durham Region Chair and Chief Executive Officer, Roger Anderson, the event’s beneficiaries include the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Durham College and the Ontario Shores Foundation for Mental Health.

“Throughout its 17 years the tournament has created and maintained a legacy of giving to community organizations,” said Susan McGovern, UOIT Vice-President, External Relations and Advancement. “The proceeds of the tournament provide assistance to students in financial need at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and at Durham College.”

This year’s event welcomed more than 225 golfers at Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility in Ajax, Ontario on June 12, as they teed off for a chance to improve the lives of individuals living in Durham Region. The event raised $320,000, officially surpassing the $5-million mark over its 17-year lifetime.

The tournament benefits from many sponsors including: AECOM, Brookvalley Developments Inc., Covanta, Dorsay Development Corporation, Fieldgate/Paradise Homes/TACC, Lenovo, Metroland Media, Miller Group, Minto, Ontario Power Generation, Ricoh Canada Inc., Runnymede Development, Scotiabank, and Tribute Communities.
