Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UPDATE: Arrest made in connection with incident at north Oshawa location

UPDATE: Thursday, September 18, 2014 – 2:30 p.m.

Arrest made after incident at north Oshawa location

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) have arrested an individual in connection with the stabbing incident that took place yesterday outside the Tim Hortons at the north Oshawa location.

On Wednesday, September 17, two males were involved in a dispute that led to an altercation resulting in a University of Ontario Institute of Technology student sustaining serious injuries. DRPS and the Office of Campus Safety responded to the incident leading to today’s arrest. The victim is recovering in hospital and is in stable condition.

UPDATE: Thursday, September 18, 2014 – 10:30 a.m.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) officers were called to Tim Hortons at the north Oshawa location. Two males were involved in a dispute and during the altercation, a student suffered serious injuries due to a stab wound. The suspect male left the area and the campus was searched by responding officers, but no arrests were made. Investigators do not believe this was a random act.

Wednesday, September 17, 2014 - 5 p.m.

Please be aware that an incident occurred between two students at the university's north Oshawa location at approximately 4 p.m. on September 17.

The Office of Campus Safety was made aware of the incident and is now working in partnership with the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

As the safety of everyone in our campus community is of the utmost importance to UOIT and Durham College both the university and college are very concerned about this incident. This is now a DRPS investigation and more information regarding the incident can be found on the DRPS website.
