Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

On-campus debate for Oshawa mayoral candidates September 23

Students and community invited to municipal election debate

In an effort to bring the election process directly to students, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), Durham College (DC) and Trent University will co-host a City of Oshawa mayoral candidate debate on Tuesday, September 23.

The 90-minute debate will take place at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre at the college and university’s joint Oshawa campus starting at 6:30 p.m. Following the debate there will be a one-hour candidate networking event where students and community members will get a chance to discuss issues of importance to them with mayoral and councillor candidates in addition to attending a campus tour(s).

Questions for the candidates can be submitted in advance of the debate to externalrelations@uoit.ca until Monday, September 22 at 4 p.m.

Take part in the full electoral process this fall: attend the debate, get to know what the issues are, and make sure you cast your ballot on Election Day, Monday, October 27!
