Games of Drones: High-tech weekend coming to UOIT
University hosting Drone Fair Ontario and annual high school robotics event
November 23, 2016
A beehive of high-tech action is on tap the final weekend of November at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa.
The Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre at the university’s north Oshawa location is the place to be when drone enthusiasts, experts and vendors from across the province will be on campus for Drone Fair Ontario, in partnership with the university’s ACE Climatic Wind Tunnel.
At the same time, the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science stages its 11th annual high school Engineering Robotics Competition.
About Drone Fair Ontario (Saturday and Sunday)
Drone Fair Ontario in gyms 3, 4 and 5 of the CRWC brings together innovators and professional pilots for a two-day exhibition celebrating drone technology. The event theme Know before you fly is a message supported by Transport Canada, the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada and Unmanned Systems Canada. Admission fee and registration information is available on the Drone Fair Ontario website.
- Hands-on workshops
- Series of drone race challenges
- Presentations by drone industry leaders
- Drone light show by Arrowonics (at dusk on Saturday)
- Tour the ACE Centre for UAV Research and the ACE Climatic Wind Tunnel (freezing rain demonstrations, drone environmental safety and reliability testing).
Drone technology, knowledge and awareness is for everyone. There are applications for many industries and for how businesses of the future will operate.
About the Engineering Robotics Competition (Saturday only)
Hundreds of future engineering students from high schools and middle schools across South Central Ontario will put their programmed robot creations to the test and challenge each other in 'SumoBot' battles. Fifty teams will gather for the showdown in gyms 1 and 2 of the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre (CRWC). Admission to the robotics event is free.
Both events are family friendly and will quench your thirst for scientific knowledge, awareness and excitement. Hope to see you on campus on Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27!
