Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT Accounting students impress at national business conference

Facing stiff competition in a field of 32 entries, a team of five Accounting students from the UOIT Faculty of Business and Information Technology’s (FBIT) Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) program earned an impressive fourth-place finish at a recent national business conference in downtown Toronto.

Fourth-year Radioactive Waste Management Design students in the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science (FESNS) enjoyed a unique opportunity this year to observe operations at Bruce Power’s Bruce A nuclear generating station on the shore of Lake Huron near Tiverton, Ontario. The Bruce Power site is the largest operating nuclear facility in the world. It currently supplies more than one-quarter of Ontario’s electricity.

UOIT and Durham College to reopen Saturday morning

Please be advised that UOIT and Durham College locations, buildings and learning sites will reopen at 6 a.m. on Saturday, February 9. The decision to reopen is based on Environment Canada’s forecast indicating that the snow will end this evening. All regularly scheduled classes and activities will resume on Saturday morning.

UOIT will be closed due to inclement weather at 2 p.m. today (Friday, February 8). All afternoon and evening classes have been cancelled and all assignment deadlines postponed. For further updates, please visit www.uoit.ca and monitor the university’s social media feeds.

The webinar is hosted by the Department of Justice, Youth Justice and Strategic Initiatives section.
