Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Ontario Tech unveils plans for Convocation 2022

University will confer nearly 2,500 degrees and six honorary degrees

Ontario Tech University will celebrate the class of 2022 during Convocation ceremonies on June 8, 9 and 10.

From Wednesday, June 8 to Friday, June 10, Ontario Tech University will celebrate the achievements and milestones of its class of 2022 along with honorary degree recipients during in-person ceremonies.

This year the university will present honorary degrees to:

  • Mr. Jeffrey Boyce and Mrs. Julia Boyce, of Evsam Holdings Ltd., for their strong commitment to volunteerism and philanthropic contributions to the communities of Durham Region, for their championing of education, of young women pursuing education and young women in science, technology, engineering and math-based disciplines, and for their steadfast ambassadorship of Ontario Tech University.
  • Dr. Naheed Dosani, Palliative Care Physician and Ontario Tech class of 2008 alum, for his relentless advocacy for health justice, his trailblazing achievements in delivering community-based hospice palliative care, and for his ongoing commitment to humanitarian efforts.
  • Mr. Christian Lassonde, Founder and Managing Partner, Impression Ventures and Director, Lassonde Family Foundation, for his outstanding work as a business leader and entrepreneur, his dedication as a mentor for the next generation of professionals, and his commitment and support to education and health care through philanthropy and volunteer activities.
  • Ms. Rania Llewellyn, President and Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of Directors of the Laurentian Bank of Canada, for her significant business successes, leadership in driving growth and change, promotion of diversity in the workplace, and her continuing commitment to supporting new Canadian immigrants.
  • Mr. John Tavares*, Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and whose junior hockey jersey number was retired by the Oshawa Generals, for his outstanding work as a Canadian athlete, his dedication as a role model to aspiring young athletes, and for inspiring the next generation to build a better world for themselves and their generation.

  • Ms. Phyllis Webstad, Founder and Executive Director of Orange Shirt Society and Author of Phyllis’s Orange Shirt, for her profound storytelling and raising awareness about the legacy of Canada’s residential school system, her advocacy for Indigenous Peoples, and her commitment to providing Indigenous Peoples with a platform to having their voices heard. 

At Convocation 2022, the university will confer approximately 2,500 degrees during smaller, faculty-specific ceremonies held at its north Oshawa campus location, outdoors on Polonsky Commons. With this year’s ceremonies, the university’s alumni base will surpass 25,000.

Ontario Tech will also formally install Mr. Mitch Frazer as the university's fourth Chancellor as part of the Faculty of Education’s Convocation ceremony on Wednesday, June 8. Mr. Frazer was named Chancellor on May 1, 2020.
