Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

UOIT professor ranked among the top 80 criminologists in the world

Dr. Liqun Cao, professor, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, was recently identified in the Journal of Criminal Justice Education as one of the most productive authors during the first decade of the 21-first century. The list is the result of a study entitled The Most Prolific Sole and Lead Authors in Elite Criminology and Criminal Justice Journals 2000-2009 by Erin A. Orrick and Henriikka Weir.

Hail CESR and all those who try it

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) launched the new Centre for Evaluation and Survey Research (CESR) today during the centre's official opening. Guests learned about the wide range of services CESR offers and how effective surveys can be created and carried out to meet the individual needs of their organization.

UOIT announces new Faculty of Science dean

She is praised by colleagues and students alike for her distinguished record of achievement at three universities in Western Canada over the past 15 years. Dr. Deborah Saucier will be bringing her outstanding personal and career reputation back to Ontario where she earned her doctoral degree to become the new dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) effective July 1.

Campus community raises more than $26,000

On March 9 faculty, staff and students turned the campus pink for its annual Power of Pink (POP) Breast Cancer Awareness Day. This year's event raised an incredible $26,061.76 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Ontario Chapter and the Durham-based, Gala of Hope. This year's tally represents a 14.7 per cent increase over last year.

UOIT Faculty of Engineering receives funding for truck tire research with Volvo

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science is proud to announce a new research contract with Volvo Group North America (Volvo 3P). Under the research leadership of Dr. Moustafa El-Gindy, associate professor, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (FEAS), Volvo 3P is funding a project involving truck tire performance and road interactions for rigid and soft road surfaces. Volvo will invest $150,000 over three years as it collaborates with Dr. El-Gindy to investigate truck tire parameters that will improve fuel economy, without sacrificing safety and cost.

UOIT assistant professor named research associate at Grandview Children's Centre

A common goal to conduct research that will positively impact the lives of children and youth with disabilities has resulted in a research and academic partnership between the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Grandview Children's Centre. Dr. Meghann Lloyd, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, has also been named a research associate at the centre.

A new video by local music artist Najjah Calibur features UOIT and Durham College hip-hop student dancers (H.E.R. and GeekFreaks) in the Campus Library and UOIT Business and Information Technology building.

The Management Development Centre(MDC) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) has introduced a number of exciting new programs for the spring as it drives to meet the growing demand for professional development opportunities in the areas of information technology security and business management.

Breaking Barriers at UOIT: Second annual Case Competition a success

More than 100 University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) students recently attended the second annual UOIT Accounting Case Competition at the Ajax Convention Centre. The theme of the competition was Breaking Barriers, where students from the Faculty of Business and Information Technology (FBIT), focused upon endeavours that are required for success in a world where geographic, cultural, social and financial barriers often shift and change. Students from the Faculties of Engineering and Applied Science, Health Sciences and Social Science and Humanities also attended the competition.

Energy Minister headlines workshop on Ontario's electricity future

The Honourable Brad Duguid, Ontario Minister of Energy says the province's energy future will remain bright, thanks to the combined effort of universities, colleges, industry, labour and government who are partnering to address Ontario's critical shortage of qualified personnel in the electricity sector. Minister Duguid was the keynote speaker at Ontario's Electricity Future: New Skills for New Jobs, a workshop developed by the Power Engineering Education Consortium (PEEC), whose mission is the development of next steps and solutions.

Two Criminology graduate students receive AP-LS award

Master of Arts in Criminology students Kiri Lutchman and Alana Saulnier were honoured at the American Psychology-Law Society (AP-LS) International Congress on Psychology and Law Conference in Miami, Florida on March 3. As recipients of the AP-LS Minority Affairs Committee (MAC) Diversity Travel Award, both students attended the conference and presented their research

UOIT celebrates grand opening of downtown Oshawa campus

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) celebrated the grand opening of its downtown Oshawa campus today during an event held at the historic Regent Theatre. Joining the celebration were Ajax-Pickering MPP Joe Dickson, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer of The Regional Municipality of Durham Roger Anderson and Oshawa Mayor John Henry.

Partnership in Action: UOIT and Ontario Power Generation

Only weeks after the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) formally renewed its long-standing collaborative partnership with Ontario Power Generation (OPG), UOIT hosted nearly 200 employees from OPG's training organization for two special training sessions.

Government-funded 3D gaming initiative enters new dimension

The building blocks for the next generation of stereoscopic three-dimensional (S-3D) gaming are being put in place thanks to a major funding announcement by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture through the Ontario Media Development Corporation's (OMDC) Entertainment and Creative Cluster Partnerships Fund along with support from Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE).
