Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Ontario Tech University Building Promises leading-edge Research in Clean and Green Energy

In front of a large gathering of distinguished guests that included government leaders, industry partners, faculty, staff and students, Ontario Tech University officially opened the spectacular Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre (ERC). The 9,290 square-metre facility is the premier training ground for future energy scientists and nuclear engineers and houses Ontario Tech University's unique-in-Canada engineering programs and research in geothermal, hydraulic, hydrogen, natural gas, nuclear, solar and wind energy technologies.

Humanities and technology connect at UOIT boot camps

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) combined humanities and technology during two boot camps hosted by the university’s Office of Research Services and the faculties of Science and Social Science and Humanities (FSSH) on October 21. The boot camps were the prelude to the main event, THATCamp - The Humanities and Technology Camp, held the following day.

Possible GO Transit bus strike

Please be advised that bus drivers at GO Transit will be in a legal strike position as of 12:01 a.m. on Monday, October 24 if negotiations between GO Transit and the union representing its bus drivers fail to produce a new collective agreement. In the event of a labour disruption, regular GO Train service would continue, but GO Bus service would not.

UOIT students make connections at Career and Education Fair

Hundreds of enthusiastic UOIT students enjoyed a glimpse into their personal futures as they packed the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre for the Student Experience Centre’s (SEC) annual Career and Education Fair. Students were able to meet and greet leaders and representatives from nearly 60 different potential employers and postgraduate study destinations during the full-day event.

Enrolment up 13 per cent at UOIT

Enrolment at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) has reached another highpoint with Day 10 enrolment numbers topping 8,423 undergraduate and graduate students attending the university.

Ontario Tech University is celebrating the beginning of a new academic year by recognizing outstanding achievements by faculty and staff over the past 12 months. UOIT alumnus receives prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate scholarship

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is proud to announce that 2009 Bachelor of Science graduate Iain Moyles has been awarded the Vanier Canada Graduate scholarship (CGS) in support of his current doctoral degree studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver. The Vanier CGS is valued at $150,000 over three years.

NSERC awards UOIT researchers $1.7 million

Fourteen researchers at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) were recently awarded Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Discovery Grants, which have a combined total of $1.7 million over the next five years.

Oil and gas executive donates $1.5 million to Ontario Tech University

Ontario Tech University will accelerate its alternative fuel research efforts thanks to a $1.5-million donation from Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sure Energy Inc. Jeffrey Boyce, The donation, the largest gift Ontario Tech University has received from an individual, will fund the Jeffrey S. Boyce research chair in Natural Gas (NG) as an Alternative Transportation Fuel.

UOIT researcher awarded funding to develop fuel cell-based ethanol sensors

OSHAWA, ON - Dr. Brad Easton, assistant professor, Chemistry in the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) Faculty of Science has received $905,600 in funding for his ongoing research to develop next-generation materials for fuel-based ethanol sensors. Dr. Easton's ultimate findings are expected to have important economic and industrial consequences in the area of road safety.

Oshawa Clinic invests in downtown with donation to UOIT

OSHAWA, ON - The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is getting a major boost thanks to the Oshawa Clinic and a $100,000 donation announced today. The donation will be used to support the development of UOIT's growing presence downtown, specifically the restoration of the former Alger Press building located at 61 Charles Street. The building now serves as a multi-purpose higher education centre for students and staff of the university.

While innovative advanced vehicle technology students at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) gear up for the final round of EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge later this spring in Michigan and Washington, D.C., current and future UOIT automotive engineering students can now look forward to being part of the exclusive competition's next phase. Spaling and Galea named UOIT Athletes of the Year

Men's Hockey captain Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ontario) and women's rowing/squash standout Shannon Galea (Oshawa, Ontario) have been named the 2010-2011 University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Athletes of the Year. The awards were presented at UOIT's fifth annual Athletic Banquet on March 31 at the General W. Sikorski Polish Veterans Association Hall in Oshawa as student-athletes, coaches and contributors were honoured for their outstanding accomplishments throughout the varsity sports season.

UOIT professor ranked among the top 80 criminologists in the world

Dr. Liqun Cao, professor, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, was recently identified in the Journal of Criminal Justice Education as one of the most productive authors during the first decade of the 21-first century. The list is the result of a study entitled The Most Prolific Sole and Lead Authors in Elite Criminology and Criminal Justice Journals 2000-2009 by Erin A. Orrick and Henriikka Weir.

She is praised by colleagues and students alike for her distinguished record of achievement at three universities in Western Canada over the past 15 years. Dr. Deborah Saucier will be bringing her outstanding personal and career reputation back to Ontario where she earned her doctoral degree to become the new dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) effective July 1.

Campus community raises more than $26,000

On March 9 faculty, staff and students turned the campus pink for its annual Power of Pink (POP) Breast Cancer Awareness Day. This year's event raised an incredible $26,061.76 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Ontario Chapter and the Durham-based, Gala of Hope. This year's tally represents a 14.7 per cent increase over last year.

UOIT Faculty of Engineering receives funding for truck tire research with Volvo

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science is proud to announce a new research contract with Volvo Group North America (Volvo 3P). Under the research leadership of Dr. Moustafa El-Gindy, associate professor, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (FEAS), Volvo 3P is funding a project involving truck tire performance and road interactions for rigid and soft road surfaces. Volvo will invest $150,000 over three years as it collaborates with Dr. El-Gindy to investigate truck tire parameters that will improve fuel economy, without sacrificing safety and cost.

A common goal to conduct research that will positively impact the lives of children and youth with disabilities has resulted in a research and academic partnership between the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Grandview Children's Centre. Breaking Barriers at UOIT: Second annual Case Competition a success

More than 100 University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) students recently attended the second annual UOIT Accounting Case Competition at the Ajax Convention Centre. The theme of the competition was Breaking Barriers, where students from the Faculty of Business and Information Technology (FBIT), focused upon endeavours that are required for success in a world where geographic, cultural, social and financial barriers often shift and change. Students from the Faculties of Engineering and Applied Science, Health Sciences and Social Science and Humanities also attended the competition.

Energy Minister headlines workshop on Ontario's electricity future

The Honourable Brad Duguid, Ontario Minister of Energy says the province's energy future will remain bright, thanks to the combined effort of universities, colleges, industry, labour and government who are partnering to address Ontario's critical shortage of qualified personnel in the electricity sector. Minister Duguid was the keynote speaker at Ontario's Electricity Future: New Skills for New Jobs, a workshop developed by the Power Engineering Education Consortium (PEEC), whose mission is the development of next steps and solutions.

UOIT celebrates grand opening of downtown Oshawa campus

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) celebrated the grand opening of its downtown Oshawa campus today during an event held at the historic Regent Theatre. UOIT rower Shannon Galea, a first-year Education student, is being recognized as one of the top female scholar athletes in Ontario University Athletics (OUA). Galea will receive her award on Wednesday, March 2 at the eighth annual Women of Influence Luncheon at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (South Building - Hall G), 255 Front Street West in Toronto.

First-ever TEDx event at UOIT hailed a major success

They arrived with energetic and curious minds, and even braved a nasty snowstorm on a Saturday night to be there. And when the hundreds of undergraduate students left the University of Ontario Institute of Technology's (UOIT) Regent Theatre on January 22 to head back out into the snow, they did so having benefitted from a concept simply known as TED.

Veridian CEO donates plug-in hybrid electric vehicle to UOIT

Veridian President and CEO Michael Angemeer handed over today the keys to his modified Toyota Prius - Canada's first plug-in hybrid solar electric vehicle - to Dr. Greg Rohrauer, assistant professor, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). The vehicle will be used as part of the Automotive Engineering program's participation in AUTO21 - Canada's national automotive research program - and vehicle-to-grid communications testing. Dr. Rohrauer is also the lead for the Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) at UOIT which will host research and development from worldwide automotive companies when it opens later this year.

Community joins UOIT to experience research excellence

Community members joined students for an evening that featured two University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) professors who presented highlights of their innovative and relevant research. The February 17 event is an annual tradition at UOIT where two Research Excellence Award recipients are asked to present their research and then celebrate their accomplishments with the campus community.

UOIT receives generous gift from Lenbrook Corp.

The entrepreneurial spirit of David S. Simmonds will live on at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), thanks to a donation from Lenbrook Corp., a Pickering, Ontario-based company he founded. The donation will establish the David S. Simmonds Entrepreneurship Award, which will recognize the Faculty of Business and Information Technology's (FBIT) winning Capstone program student team each year with a $5,000 grant.

UOIT's Student Experience Centre holds first-annual Housing Day

Calling it an event that surpassed all expectations, the Student Experience Centre (SEC) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) welcomed hundreds of visitors to its first-ever Housing Fair.
