Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is proud that its founding president will play a key role in deciding the future of the Pickering Lands. Dr. Gary Polonsky has been named by the Honorable Lisa Raitt, federal Minister of Transportation, as the Independent Advisor on the economic development of the Pickering Lands.

ACE helping to make firefighting a safer occupation

UOIT has partnered with Toronto Fire Services in a unique research collaboration to examine the physical effects of harsh climatic conditions on the human body, specifically as they apply to firefighters on the job. The research findings will provide new insight into safer working practices and appropriate techniques to minimize safety risks for firefighters everywhere.

First classes are still several weeks away, but incoming first-year students at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) are being encouraged to get a head-start on preparing for university life.

Fourth-year Automotive, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (AMME) students demonstrated their knowledge by putting their work on display for fellow students, faculty, staff and the general public at the 10th-annual Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Design Engineering Exhibition. They also competed for cash awards in the ninth-annual Capstone Design Competition

Education Library services during Pan Am Games closure

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) Education Library, located in the Education Building at 11 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa, Ontario, will close from Friday, July 10 through Friday, July 24. The closure is part of the operational changes to the university’s downtown services as a result of the Pan Am Games competitions being held at the General Motors Centre during this period.

Dr. Schmidt’s appointment was announced on Canada Day by the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada.
