Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

People with intellectual disabilities experience significant health disparities and have more unmet health needs than the typical population. Over the past 15 years, Special Olympics International has conducted more than 1.4 million free health screenings of Special Olympics athletes in more than 100 countries, building one of the largest international databases in the world on the health of people with intellectual disabilities.

OSHAWA, ONTARIO – The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) proudly shares news that the Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA) has recognized Dr. Pierre Côté, Canada Research Chair in Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation, with the CCA’s inaugural Public Service Award. This new award, presented at a formal ceremony November 21 in Toronto, Ontario, was created to honour a chiropractor who has helped make possible the federal legislation and funding that supports research and who has created public health and advocacy programs of major importance.

Ontario Tech University Professor Dr. Hossam Gaber led a panel of international experts invited to share their latest research findings at a December electric grid planning conference in Indonesia. Royal Society’s recognition of Dr. Isabel Pedersen brings prestige to UOIT

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) salutes Dr. Isabel Pedersen, Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Digital Life, Media and Culture, as the university’s first-ever member of the Royal Society of Canada’s (RSC) College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. Dr. Pedersen was part of the RSC’s inaugural cohort of 91 members at a formal ceremony on November 21 in Quebec City.

Students are invited to submit a three-minute or 300-word pitch showing how social science and humanities research is improving Canadians' lives, world and future.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) campus community celebrated the outstanding achievements of faculty and staff throughout 2014 in a special ceremony November 4 at the Regent Theatre. The annual Awards of Excellence recognition event honours individual commitment as well as team contribution.

Campus Library battery recycling a continued success

More than 18 kilograms (40 pounds) of household batteries were collected in the library’s recycling pilot project over the 2014 summer semester. Due to the success of the program, the Campus Library plans to continue collecting batteries for the coming year.

UOIT students engage in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

Grace period for U-Pass stickers extended to September 30

Due to a delay in the receipt of the full shipment of new U-Pass stickers in the Campus ID office, Durham Region Transit has extended the grace period for the renewal of 2014-2015 U-Pass stickers to Tuesday, September 30. Students who have not yet obtained their new U-Pass sticker can continue to show their current, validated campus ID card when boarding a U-Pass bus route.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of the Honourable Jim Flaherty, former Federal Finance Minister, and the Member of Parliament for Whitby-Oshawa.

Participants had to build a bridge spanning 600 millimetres, using no more than 200 unbroken popsicle sticks.

UOIT researcher discusses wearable technologies in health care at MaRs

While the shift from carryables like smartphones to wearable technology is already happening, now is the opportunity to stop and ask what we’re doing with the technology and how consumers can be protected. That was the message communicated by Dr. Isabel Pedersen, Canada Research Chair in Digital Life, Media, and Culture and Director of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) Digital Culture and Media Lab (DeCiMaL), at a recent panel discussing the growing use of wearable technology in health care.

Congratulations to the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science (FESNS) for having the highest percentage of graduating students who submitted their UOIT memories as part of the Graduating Class Challenge. As a result, a $2,000 scholarship will be provided to one of the faculty’s fourth-year students in the 2014-2015 academic year.

Focusing on the work of graduating students, the Fridge to Fringe art exhibit is based on the idea of moving from the security of the support received at home, out into the community where artists attempt to establish themselves in the public eye.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) in Oshawa, Ontario is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Greg Crawford as the new Dean of the Faculty of Science, effective July 1, 2014. Dr. Crawford’s career has been dedicated to physical oceanography and limnology (the study of inland waters) as well as the development and application of remote sensing techniques.
