Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Over the past 15 years, Special Olympics International has conducted more than 1.4 million free health screenings of Special Olympics athletes in more than 100 countries, building one of the largest international databases in the world on the health of people with intellectual disabilities.

OSHAWA, ONTARIO – The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) proudly shares news that the Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA) has recognized Dr. Pierre Côté, Canada Research Chair in Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation, with the CCA’s inaugural Public Service Award. This new award, presented at a formal ceremony November 21 in Toronto, Ontario, was created to honour a chiropractor who has helped make possible the federal legislation and funding that supports research and who has created public health and advocacy programs of major importance.

Royal Society’s recognition of Dr. Isabel Pedersen brings prestige to UOIT

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) salutes Dr. Isabel Pedersen, Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Digital Life, Media and Culture, as the university’s first-ever member of the Royal Society of Canada’s (RSC) College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. Dr. Pedersen was part of the RSC’s inaugural cohort of 91 members at a formal ceremony on November 21 in Quebec City.

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

In 1991, December 6 was declared by Canada’s Parliament as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The declaration came two years after the murder of 14 women at L’École Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec. This year marks the 25th anniversary of that horrific event.

Return all overdue books: You may not get your marks!

This is a reminder that the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) will not release your fall-term grades if you have any overdue library books or unpaid library fines. UOIT presents awards for faculty and staff excellence

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) campus community celebrated the outstanding achievements of faculty and staff throughout 2014 in a special ceremony November 4 at the Regent Theatre. The annual Awards of Excellence recognition event honours individual commitment as well as team contribution.

Campus Library battery recycling a continued success

More than 18 kilograms (40 pounds) of household batteries were collected in the library’s recycling pilot project over the 2014 summer semester. Due to the success of the program, the Campus Library plans to continue collecting batteries for the coming year.

UOIT students engage in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

As part of the 20th-annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, members of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s Blue Team came together on September 27 to clean Oshawa Creek shorelines of potentially harmful litter.

Grace period for U-Pass stickers extended to September 30

Due to a delay in the receipt of the full shipment of new U-Pass stickers in the Campus ID office, Durham Region Transit has extended the grace period for the renewal of 2014-2015 U-Pass stickers to Tuesday, September 30. At least one in three adolescent students in Canada having reported being bullied, according to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Jennifer Laffier, an expert in bullying behaviour among children and adolescents at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), has developed program - Hero Power versus Coward Power© - to empower children and put an end to bullying.

UOIT researcher teaming with Oakville company to help Canadians reduce water consumption

Canada is a country blessed with a wealth of natural resources, a list that includes reliable access to clean water. Despite enjoying this abundance, Canadians are also notorious water wasters. Environment Canada says each Canadian uses an average of 350 litres of water a day: the second-highest consumption rate in the world, next to the United States. Canadians use twice as much water as Europeans.

FSSH students fostering change within their communities

Leadership is not something you learn – it’s something you do. That was the idea behind the challenge issued to 76 students in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities' (FSSH) Leadership and Administration course at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of the Honourable Jim Flaherty, former Federal Finance Minister, and the Member of Parliament for Whitby-Oshawa.

UOIT researcher discusses wearable technologies in health care at MaRs

While the shift from carryables like smartphones to wearable technology is already happening, now is the opportunity to stop and ask what we’re doing with the technology and how consumers can be protected. That was the message communicated by Dr. Isabel Pedersen, Canada Research Chair in Digital Life, Media, and Culture and Director of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) Digital Culture and Media Lab (DeCiMaL), at a recent panel discussing the growing use of wearable technology in health care.

The Graduating Class Challenge had great student participation, with more than 25 per cent of graduating students submitting their fond UOIT memories and people of influence.

Congratulations to the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science (FESNS) for having the highest percentage of graduating students who submitted their UOIT memories as part of the Graduating Class Challenge. As a result, a $2,000 scholarship will be provided to one of the faculty’s fourth-year students in the 2014-2015 academic year.

Focusing on the work of graduating students, the Fridge to Fringe art exhibit is based on the idea of moving from the security of the support received at home, out into the community where artists attempt to establish themselves in the public eye.

Federal budget initiatives align with UOIT’s research priorities

Rotaract clubs raise funds for UOIT students

More than 200 members of Rotary clubs from across southern Ontario attended a Scholarship Dinner at Tosca Banquet Hall in Oshawa, Ontario on October 4 in support of University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) students.
